Descript vs Submagic

Buy Submagic if the only thing missing is the finish: captions, hook titles, audio cleanup, b-roll. Buy Descript if you are actually editing — cutting, restructuring, working from a transcript — and want one tool for the whole job. The tiebreaker is metering: Descript charges for hours of media you bring in, Submagic charges for videos you finish.

Disclosure: this page is published by Kineo, which is not one of the two tools compared here and does not compete with either on the job they do. There is a short, clearly labelled note about Kineo at the bottom. Everything above it is written as if we had nothing at stake, because on this comparison we do not.

The verdict

Descript taxes your inputs and Submagic taxes your outputs

Descript counts media hours ingested: 60 minutes free, 10 hours on Hobbyist at $24/month or $16 annually, 30 on Creator at $35 or $24, 40 on Business at $65 or $50. Submagic counts finished videos: 3 free, 15 on Starter at $19/member/month or $12 yearly, 40 on Pro at $39 or $23, 100 on Business + API at $69 or $41. Record a lot and edit little, and Descript is expensive. Record little and post daily, and Submagic’s 15-video Starter cap binds first.

Both free tiers watermark, and the caps are very different

Descript Free: 60 minutes of media a month, 100 one-time AI credits, 720p watermarked exports. Submagic Free: 3 watermarked videos a month, capped at 200MB and 1 minute 30 seconds each. Note "one-time" on Descript’s AI credits — they are not a monthly allowance on the free plan.

Submagic prices per member; Descript prices per plan

Submagic’s figures are quoted per member per month, so a second person is a second subscription. Descript quotes a plan price with Enterprise adding SSO, SCIM and audit logs. For a solo operator this is irrelevant; for two people it is roughly a $144 to $228 annual difference on the Starter tier alone.

One of them is a workflow change and the other is an addition

Adding Submagic to whatever you already use is small and reversible — you upload a clip and get a better clip. Moving to Descript is a change in how you edit. Weigh the switching cost, not only the subscription, because the subscription is the smaller number.

Which one you should pick

Pick Descript if…

  • You are editing, not just finishing — cutting, restructuring, removing sections.
  • Transcript-based editing genuinely suits how you think.
  • You need transcripts as an artefact: transcription in 25 languages on every paid plan.
  • You want 4K without buying the top tier: Creator at $35/month, or $24 annually.
  • You want a free tier that shows you the real editor: 60 minutes of media and 100 AI credits.

Pick Submagic if…

  • The edit is done and the clip just needs to look native to the feed.
  • You want a countable quota to plan a posting schedule against: 15, 40 or 100 videos a month.
  • You want AI hook titles, audio cleanup, silence removal and caption translation — all at Pro, $39/month or $23 yearly.
  • You need licensed b-roll: the Storyblocks library is included from Pro.
  • You need 4K at 60fps, which is Business + API at $69/month, or $41 yearly.

The differences that actually matter

The media-hours trap for multi-track recordings

Descript counts what you ingest. A weekly two-hour recording is roughly 8 to 9 hours a month before you edit anything, which fits Hobbyist’s 10 hours with nothing to spare — and a second camera angle doubles it. Anyone recording multi-track should price Creator’s 30 hours as the realistic starting tier. Submagic has no ingestion tax; it caps duration per video instead, at 2 minutes on Starter and 5 on Pro.

AI credits mean different things on each side

Descript gives 400, 800 and 1,500 AI credits a month by paid tier, spent on its AI tools. Submagic gives 3, 6 and 15 AI credits a month by tier — two orders of magnitude apart, because they buy different operations. Do not read those numbers across the table; they are not a comparable unit.

Resolution ladders climb differently

Descript: 720p watermarked free, 1080p watermark-free from Hobbyist, 4K from Creator at $35/month. Submagic: 1080p/30fps from Starter, 1080p and 2K from Pro, 4K/60fps on Business at $69/month. If 4K is a requirement, Descript reaches it $34 cheaper per month.

Neither creates a video from nothing

Descript edits recordings you bring; Submagic styles clips you bring. Descript has AI voice tools, but the product assumes recorded audio to work against. If your plan is to publish without recording anything, both are the second step of a pipeline whose first step is missing.

Frequently asked questions

Is Descript or Submagic cheaper?

Submagic at entry: $19/member/month, or $12/member/month billed yearly, against Descript Hobbyist at $24/month, or $16 billed annually. Both read from their own pricing pages on July 26, 2026. Note that Submagic’s figure is per member and Descript’s is not.

Can Submagic replace a video editor?

No. It works on a finished video and adds captions, b-roll, hook titles, audio cleanup and silence removal. Cutting, restructuring or removing a section of the underlying edit is not what it sells — that is Descript’s side.

Do I need both?

Plenty of people run Descript for the edit and Submagic for the finish. At $16/month for Descript Hobbyist billed annually plus $12/member/month for Submagic Starter yearly, that is about $28 a month for both halves.

What are Descript media hours and do they roll over?

They count the video and audio you bring in each month — 60 minutes free, 10 hours on Hobbyist, 30 on Creator, 40 on Business. Rollover is not stated on the pricing page we read, so budget as if the allowance resets monthly.

How many videos can I finish per month on Submagic?

3 on the free plan, 15 up to 2 minutes each on Starter, 40 up to 5 minutes on Pro, 100 up to 30 minutes on Business + API. If you post daily, 15 a month is the first ceiling you will hit.

Disclosure: Kineo publishes this page and is neither tool above. It is not an editor and not a captioning layer — it generates a faceless 9:16 Short from a typed topic, captions included, with no timeline and no upload. Relevant only if the honest answer to this comparison is that you have nothing to edit and nothing to finish yet.
