HeyGen vs Pictory

Buy HeyGen if the message needs a face delivering it. Buy Pictory if the message needs illustrating and you already have the words — an article, a document, a script. The pricing gap is small; the format gap is total, and it is not something you can change later without redoing your library.

Disclosure: this page is published by Kineo, which is not one of the two tools compared here and does not compete with either on the job they do. There is a short, clearly labelled note about Kineo at the bottom. Everything above it is written as if we had nothing at stake, because on this comparison we do not.

The verdict

Same entry price, opposite output

HeyGen Creator is $29/month, or $24/month billed annually. Pictory Starter is $29/month, or $25/month billed annually. Identical sticker. HeyGen returns an avatar talking to camera; Pictory returns stock visuals matched to your text with an AI voiceover on top. Nothing about the $29 tells you which one you need.

Pictory is metered generously; HeyGen is metered precisely

Pictory Starter includes 200 video minutes a month, or 2,400 a year — at 35 seconds a Short, well over a hundred a month. HeyGen Creator includes 600 credits with a published burn rate of 20 credits a minute on Avatar IV/V and 3 on Avatar III. If your plan is daily short-form, Pictory’s allowance will not be the thing that stops you and HeyGen’s might, depending entirely on which avatar generation you use.

Only one of them has a permanently free plan

HeyGen Free is $0 for 3 videos a month up to a minute each, with 1 custom digital twin and 500+ stock avatars. Pictory lists a 14-day free trial on every tier and no permanently free plan. If you want to evaluate slowly, that is a real constraint — a fortnight is not long enough to find out whether a publishing habit sticks.

Pictory takes more kinds of input than HeyGen does

A script, a URL or a document works on every Pictory tier, and long-video input is added from Professional at $59/month, or $35 billed annually. HeyGen expects a script you wrote. If you have a back catalogue of written material waiting to become video, that is Pictory’s entire premise and it is not something HeyGen offers.

Side by side

Every figure below was read off each vendor’s own pricing page on July 26, 2026. Where a tier table did not resolve to readable prices, the cell says so rather than guessing — a wrong competitor price is worse than no price at all.

Which one you should pick

Pick HeyGen if…

  • A recognisable presenter is part of the brand, or the content needs a human to carry authority.
  • You are localising: 175+ languages from Creator up, with voice cloning at the same tier.
  • Videos run long — up to 30 minutes on Creator, 60 on Business.
  • You want a permanently free plan to evaluate on, even a small one: 3 videos a month, 1 minute each.
  • Your usage is irregular and rollover matters — HeyGen states unused credits roll over for paid subscribers.

Pick Pictory if…

  • You have written material — articles, documents, scripts — and want it on video without filming.
  • You publish in volume: 200 video minutes a month at Starter, 600 at Professional, 1,800 on Team.
  • You need several aspect ratios out of the same source.
  • Nobody should be on screen, because the content is the visual.
  • You are buying for a team: Pictory Team is $199/month, or $119/month annually, for 3+ users.

The differences that actually matter

Where the pixels come from

Every HeyGen frame is a rendered avatar; stock footage is not the point of the product. Every Pictory frame is stock visual matched to the text you supplied. That single difference determines the production cost, the tone, the localisation story and the format of every video you will ever make with either. Decide it first and let the price follow.

Credits versus minutes, and why the numbers do not compare

HeyGen sells credits against avatar rendering with a per-minute rate that varies sevenfold by avatar generation. Pictory sells minutes of finished video flat, regardless of how the video was made. Reading "600 credits" against "200 minutes" tells you nothing; the only honest conversion is to estimate your own monthly finished minutes and price both against that.

Watermarks: one policy stated, one implied

Pictory states no watermark on paid plans and has no permanently free plan to watermark. HeyGen lists watermark removal from Creator up, which is how you know the free plan carries one. Neither has a free path to clean output, and for a monetised channel that matters more than most feature lines.

The 4K and resolution question

HeyGen lists 1080p export on Creator and 4K from Pro at $49/month. Pictory does not headline export resolution on its pricing page in what we could read; it meters minutes instead. If a specific resolution is contractual for you, that is one published figure and one to confirm with the vendor.

Frequently asked questions

Is HeyGen or Pictory cheaper?

They start at the same $29/month. Annually HeyGen Creator is $24/month and Pictory Starter is $25/month, so HeyGen is marginally cheaper on a year. Both figures read from their own pricing pages on July 26, 2026. What each buys is not comparable — 600 avatar credits against 200 video minutes.

Can Pictory make a talking-head video?

Pictory’s premise is stock visuals matched to text with AI voiceover. Avatars are not what its pricing page sells. If a presenter on screen is the requirement, HeyGen is built for exactly that and Pictory is not.

Does Pictory have a free plan?

No permanently free plan is listed — a 14-day free trial appears on every tier, verified at pictory.ai/pricing on July 26, 2026. HeyGen does have a permanently free plan: 3 videos a month, 1 minute each.

Which is better for faceless YouTube Shorts?

Pictory, of the two, because faceless means no person on screen and Pictory’s output is stock visuals over narration. Its 200-minute Starter allowance is far more than a daily Shorts schedule needs. HeyGen can export 9:16, but you would be paying for an avatar engine in order not to use it.

Can I turn a blog post into a video with either?

Pictory accepts a script, a URL or a document on every tier — that is the use case it was built around. HeyGen expects you to arrive with a script already written, and does not advertise document or URL import on its pricing page.

One disclosed third option

Disclosure: Kineo publishes this page and is not one of the two tools. It sits on the Pictory side of the line but narrower — a topic sentence instead of a document, 9:16 only, no multi-ratio export and no long-video handling. If you have written material to repurpose, Pictory is built for that and Kineo is not.
