The bill responds to opposite behaviours
Descript counts media hours ingested: 60 minutes free, 10 hours on Hobbyist at $24/month or $16 annually, 30 on Creator at $35 or $24, 40 on Business at $65 or $50. HeyGen counts credits against rendering, at a published 20 credits per minute on Avatar IV/V and 3 on Avatar III, with 600 credits on Creator at $29/month. Shoot four takes in Descript and you pay for four. Render one minute in HeyGen and you pay for one.
Free tiers: a small real editor against three short avatar videos
Descript Free gives 60 minutes of media a month, 100 one-time AI credits and 720p watermarked exports. HeyGen Free gives 3 videos a month up to a minute each, 1 custom digital twin, 30+ languages and 500+ stock avatars. Descript’s is a working editor at a small allowance; HeyGen’s is a genuine look at the avatar output.
Only one of them rolls credits over
HeyGen states that unused credits roll over for paid subscribers, with annual subscribers accumulating until renewal. Descript’s pricing page does not state rollover for media hours or AI credits in what we could read. If your production is lumpy — nothing for three weeks, then a burst — that difference compounds across a year.
Languages are a HeyGen feature and a Descript by-product
HeyGen lists 175+ languages from Creator up plus voice cloning at the same tier. Descript lists transcription in 25 languages on every paid plan. Those are not the same claim: one is delivery in another language, the other is understanding what was said. Decide which you actually need.

Both watermark free output, at different resolutions
Descript Free exports 720p with a watermark, going watermark-free at 1080p from Hobbyist at $24/month. HeyGen lists watermark removal from Creator at $29/month. Descript reaches clean output $5 a month cheaper; HeyGen reaches 4K at $49 against Descript’s $35.
The multi-track trap only exists on one side
Because Descript bills ingested media, a second camera angle doubles your monthly consumption before you have edited anything. A weekly two-hour recording is 8 to 9 hours single-track — Hobbyist’s 10 hours with nothing spare. HeyGen has no ingestion concept at all; there is nothing to upload.
What you get to keep
Descript leaves you with an edited version of something real you recorded. HeyGen leaves you with a rendered performance by an avatar you licensed, plus up to 1 custom digital twin on free and 5 on Business. If long-term brand equity in a specific human face matters, those are different assets.
Neither produces faceless narration over stock footage
Descript works with footage you captured; HeyGen renders a person. Narration over cut b-roll with nobody on screen is not the output of either, and if that is the format you want, this page has told you the useful thing rather than sold you the wrong tool.
