Descript vs Synthesia

Buy Descript if your material is recorded and somebody has to edit it. Buy Synthesia if there is no footage and the video needs to be produced, reviewed, translated and shipped into a learning system. Synthesia’s free tier is far more generous for evaluation; Descript’s is the only one of the two that shows you a real editor.

Disclosure: this page is published by Kineo, which is not one of the two tools compared here and does not compete with either on the job they do. There is a short, clearly labelled note about Kineo at the bottom. Everything above it is written as if we had nothing at stake, because on this comparison we do not.

The verdict

The monthly ceiling is stated in different units and both bind

Descript counts media hours ingested: 60 minutes free, 10 hours on Hobbyist at $24/month or $16 annually, 30 on Creator at $35 or $24, 40 on Business at $65 or $50. Synthesia counts finished minutes: 10 a month on Basic and Starter, 30 on Creator at $89/month or $64 yearly, unlimited only on Enterprise. Descript is generous with output and strict with input; Synthesia is the exact reverse.

Synthesia’s free plan is the better evaluation and Descript’s is the better product demo

Synthesia Basic gives 1,200 credits, up to 10 minutes of video a month, 25 AI-generated video assets, 9 avatars, 160+ languages and 1 editor seat, with its logo on the output — the same minute allowance as its paid Starter tier. Descript Free gives 60 minutes of media, 100 one-time AI credits and 720p watermarked exports: less output, but the real editor.

Seats reveal who each product expects to be in the room

Synthesia sells 1 editor plus guests — 3 on Starter, 5 on Creator — because somebody has to approve the video. Descript publishes plan prices with SSO, SCIM and audit logs on Enterprise. One is priced around an approval chain from the entry tier; the other adds governance only at the top.

Localisation is a first-class feature on one side

Synthesia lists 160+ languages and voices on every tier, the free plan included. Descript lists transcription in 25 languages on every paid plan. Delivering the same message in 40 markets is a Synthesia feature; understanding what was said in a recording is a Descript one.

Side by side

Every figure below was read off each vendor’s own pricing page on July 26, 2026. Where a tier table did not resolve to readable prices, the cell says so rather than guessing — a wrong competitor price is worse than no price at all.

Descript and Synthesia compared on the 11 things that decide it for a faceless-channel operator, each cell dated with the day it was read off the vendor’s own page.

Which one you should pick

Pick Descript if…

  • The material is recorded and editing it is the job.
  • Transcript-based editing suits how your team works with spoken word.
  • You need transcripts as an artefact: 25 languages on every paid plan.
  • You want 4K without buying the top tier: Creator at $35/month, or $24 annually.
  • Your monthly volume of finished video is high — Descript does not cap output minutes.

Pick Synthesia if…

  • There is no footage and nobody wants to be filmed.
  • You need SAML/SSO, brand kits or SCORM export — those are on Enterprise and they are the reason to be here.
  • Reviewers need access without an editor seat each: 1 editor plus 3 guests on Starter, plus 5 on Creator.
  • You are localising: 160+ languages and voices on every tier.
  • You want the most generous free evaluation available: 10 minutes a month at the cost of a logo.

The differences that actually matter

Watermark and logo are the same idea with different names

Descript exports free video at 720p with a watermark, going watermark-free at 1080p from Hobbyist at $24/month. Synthesia puts its logo on free-plan video and makes it removable on paid plans, the cheapest being Starter at $29/month or $18 yearly. Neither gives clean output for nothing.

Ten minutes a month is smaller than it sounds

Synthesia Basic and Starter both include up to 10 minutes of finished video per month. That is roughly one short training module. Creator at $89/month, or $64 yearly, triples it to 30. If your team produces weekly, price Creator as the entry point rather than Starter, and check the annual figures — 120 minutes a year on Starter, 360 on Creator.

The media-hours tax catches multi-camera teams

Descript bills what you bring in, so a two-camera recording doubles consumption before any editing. A weekly two-hour session is 8 to 9 hours a month single-track, which fits Hobbyist’s 10 hours with nothing spare. Synthesia has no ingestion concept at all — there is nothing to upload.

Neither produces faceless narration over stock footage

Synthesia puts an avatar and a slide on screen; Descript works with what you recorded. Narration over cut b-roll with nobody in frame is not the output of either. Worth stating because a share of people asking this question are describing that format without a name for it.

Frequently asked questions

Is Descript or Synthesia cheaper?

Synthesia at entry on annual billing: Starter is $29/month, or $18 billed yearly, against Descript Hobbyist at $24/month, or $16 annually — so Descript is marginally cheaper either way. Both read from their own pricing pages on July 26, 2026. Synthesia Starter includes 10 minutes of finished video a month; Descript Hobbyist includes 10 hours of ingested media.

Which free plan is better?

For evaluating output volume, Synthesia: 1,200 credits, up to 10 minutes of video a month, 9 avatars, 160+ languages, with its logo on the video. For evaluating a real editing workflow, Descript: 60 minutes of media, 100 one-time AI credits, 720p watermarked.

Can Synthesia edit a video I recorded?

Synthesia renders presenter video from a script with avatars and slides. Editing footage you captured — cutting, restructuring, removing filler — is Descript’s job and is not what Synthesia’s pricing page sells.

Does Descript have SSO?

Descript lists SSO, SCIM and audit logs on its Enterprise tier. Synthesia lists SAML/SSO on Enterprise as well, alongside brand kits and SCORM export. Both put governance at the top; only Synthesia builds the seat model around reviewers from the entry tier.

How many minutes of video can I make per month?

Synthesia caps it explicitly: 10 minutes on Basic and Starter, 30 on Creator, unlimited on Enterprise. Descript does not cap output minutes at all — it caps how much media you bring in, at 10, 30 or 40 hours by paid tier.

Disclosure: Kineo publishes this page and is neither tool above. It has no governance features, no seat model and no editing timeline — it generates a faceless 9:16 Short from a typed topic. It is not an organisational video tool and would be a poor substitute for either product above in a company setting.
