Pictory vs Synthesia

Buy Pictory if the visuals should carry the message and nobody needs to be on screen. Buy Synthesia if an organisation needs a presenter, governance and localisation. The entry prices are identical at $29/month, and Pictory Starter includes 200 video minutes a month against Synthesia Starter’s 10. That is a twentyfold difference in output for the same money, buying two different things.

Disclosure: this page is published by Kineo, which is not one of the two tools compared here and does not compete with either on the job they do. There is a short, clearly labelled note about Kineo at the bottom. Everything above it is written as if we had nothing at stake, because on this comparison we do not.

The verdict

200 minutes against 10, at the same $29

Pictory Starter is $29/month, or $25 annually, for 200 video minutes a month — 2,400 a year. Synthesia Starter is $29/month, or $18 yearly, for up to 10 minutes a month, or 120 a year. Neither is overpriced; they are selling different things. But if your requirement is volume, that single line answers the question before you read any feature list.

Synthesia has a free plan and Pictory has a clock

Synthesia Basic gives 1,200 credits, up to 10 minutes of video a month, 25 AI-generated video assets, 9 avatars, 160+ languages and 1 editor seat, with its logo on the output — the same minute allowance as its paid Starter tier. Pictory lists a 14-day free trial on every tier and no permanently free plan.

Input flexibility versus output governance

Pictory accepts a script, a URL or a document on every tier, adding long-video input from Professional at $59/month or $35 annually. Synthesia accepts a script and adds SAML/SSO, brand kits and SCORM export on Enterprise, with an editor-plus-guests seat model from the entry tier. One grew wider at the input; the other grew deeper at the approval and delivery end.

Localisation is Synthesia’s strongest single claim

160+ languages and voices on every tier, including the free one. Pictory includes AI voiceover generated from your text but does not publish a comparable language count on its pricing page in what we could read. If shipping the same message into many markets is the job, that is a published number against a blank.

Side by side

Every figure below was read off each vendor’s own pricing page on July 26, 2026. Where a tier table did not resolve to readable prices, the cell says so rather than guessing — a wrong competitor price is worse than no price at all.

Which one you should pick

Pick Pictory if…

  • Nobody should be on screen — the visuals are the content.
  • You have written material — articles, documents, scripts — waiting to become video.
  • You publish in volume: 200 video minutes a month on Starter, 600 on Professional, 1,800 on Team.
  • You need more than one aspect ratio from the same source.
  • You are buying for a team without an approval chain: Team is $199/month, or $119 annually, for 3+ users.

Pick Synthesia if…

  • A presenter on screen is the requirement, not an option.
  • You need SAML/SSO, brand kits or SCORM export — those are on Enterprise.
  • You are localising: 160+ languages and voices on every tier.
  • Reviewers need access without an editor seat each: 1 editor plus 3 guests on Starter, plus 5 on Creator.
  • You want a permanently free plan to evaluate on: 10 minutes a month at the cost of a logo.

The differences that actually matter

Minutes are the currency on both sides, which makes this comparison unusually honest

Most pairs in this cluster meter in incompatible units. Here both vendors publish minutes of finished video: Pictory at 200, 600 and 1,800 a month by tier; Synthesia at 10, 10 and 30 with unlimited only on Enterprise. That means you can compare them directly, and the comparison is not close on volume.

Watermark and logo

Pictory states no watermark on paid plans and has no permanently free plan. Synthesia puts its logo on free-plan video and makes it removable on any paid plan. Neither gives clean output for nothing, but only one of them lets you see the output before paying.

Avatar counts are a Synthesia ladder and a Pictory non-feature

Synthesia lists 9 avatars on Basic, 125+ on Starter, 180+ on Creator and 240+ on Enterprise, plus 3 and 5 personal avatars on the paid tiers. Pictory does not sell avatars — its visual layer is stock footage matched to your text. If a specific face is required, that is a whole product category difference and not a feature gap.

One of these can make a faceless Short and one cannot

Pictory produces narrated video over stock visuals with nobody on screen, which is the definition of the faceless format, and 200 minutes a month is far more than a daily posting schedule needs. Synthesia renders a presenter, which is the opposite format. This is the clearest fork on the page.

Frequently asked questions

Is Pictory or Synthesia cheaper?

They match at $29/month monthly. On annual billing Synthesia Starter is $18/month against Pictory Starter at $25/month, so Synthesia is cheaper on a year — while including 10 minutes of video a month against Pictory’s 200. Both read from their own pricing pages on July 26, 2026.

Which one can make faceless YouTube Shorts?

Pictory. It produces narrated video over stock visuals with nobody on screen, and its 200-minute Starter allowance is far more than a daily Shorts schedule requires. Synthesia renders an avatar in frame, which is a presenter format.

Does Pictory have a free plan?

No permanently free plan is listed — a 14-day free trial appears on every tier, checked on July 26, 2026. Synthesia has a permanently free Basic plan: 1,200 credits and up to 10 minutes of video a month, with its logo on the output.

How many minutes of video does each include?

Pictory: 200 a month on Starter, 600 on Professional, 1,800 on Team. Synthesia: 10 a month on Basic and Starter, 30 on Creator, unlimited only on Enterprise.

Can Pictory put a presenter on screen?

Its premise is stock visuals matched to text with AI voiceover; avatars are not what its pricing page sells. If a synthetic presenter is required, Synthesia is built for exactly that.

Disclosure: Kineo publishes this page and is neither tool above. It is on the Pictory side of the fork — faceless, narrated, stock and generative footage — but takes a topic sentence instead of a document and renders 9:16 only. If you have documents to repurpose across ratios, Pictory is the broader tool and we would say so on any page.
