The differences that actually matter
Watermarks: one free plan carries one, the other has no free plan
Descript Free exports 720p with a watermark, going watermark-free at 1080p from Hobbyist at $24/month. Pictory states no watermark on paid plans and does not publish a permanently free plan to watermark in the first place. The practical version: there is no way to get clean output from either without paying.
Where the visuals come from
Descript works with footage you supply and has a stock library that is not the centre of the product. Pictory’s entire premise is matching built-in stock visuals to the text you supply. If the question is "who finds the pictures", that is a core feature on one side and a convenience on the other.
The media-hours ceiling catches multi-track recorders
Descript counts what you ingest, so a two-camera setup doubles your monthly consumption before any editing. A weekly two-hour recording is 8 to 9 hours a month single-track. If that describes you, Creator’s 30 hours is the realistic starting tier, not Hobbyist’s 10.
Long-video input is a tier gate on Pictory
Pictory accepts script, URL and document input on every tier but adds long-video input only from Professional at $59/month, or $35 annually.
